Clinical research associate salaries in Australia varies more than most life sciences roles, largely because "CRA" covers everything from a graduate monitor 18 months into the industry to a senior CRA running complex oncology or other medical trials independently.
Reported averages range from around $95,000 to $130,000-plus across Glassdoor, Indeed, PayScale and SalaryExpert, depending on the experience level each dataset measures, so a single headline figure tends to hide more than it reveals.
Here's how clinical research salaries in Australia actually breaks down by level, plus what pushes them higher or lower.
Clinical Research Associate Salaries in Australia by Experience Level
Entry-Level or Graduate CRA
A graduate or in-house CRA with 0–2 years' experience typically earns between $65,000 and $90,000 base. Entry-level CRA salaries in Australia sits toward the lower end of this band for in-house or line-CRA roles, and toward the top end once a graduate moves into field monitoring.
CRA I / CRA II (Standard Monitoring Role)
This is the core of the CRA salaries in Australia data most job seekers compare against. Glassdoor puts average pay for a mid-level CRA at around $95,000 in Sydney and $103,000 in Melbourne, while Indeed's broader Australian average sits closer to $103,000 – a reasonable midpoint for someone with two to five years' monitoring experience across CRO or sponsor-side roles.
Senior CRA
Senior CRAs with eight or more years' experience, particularly those running complex or oncology studies independently, commonly report total packages between $130,000 and $160,000. Top-end figures reported by SalaryExpert and Glassdoor's 90th-percentile data both cluster around this range for senior, sponsor-side positions.
What Affects CRA Salaries in Australia
Employer type is one of the biggest levers on clinical research salaries in Australia. Sponsor-side CRA roles (working directly for a pharmaceutical or biotech company) generally pay more than CRO-based roles at the same experience level, partly because sponsors often carry fewer, larger studies per CRA.
Therapeutic area matters too – oncology, rare disease, and complex device trials tend to command a premium over more standard therapeutic areas, given the additional protocol complexity and site relationship management involved.
Whether the role is in-house (remote monitoring, coordination) or field-based (on-site visits, travel-heavy), this may shift the number, as does city: Sydney and Melbourne roles generally advertise above regional or Brisbane-based positions, reflecting where most sponsor and CRO head offices sit.

Public averages are a useful starting point, but they rarely account for your specific therapeutic area, sponsor versus CRO experience, or years of independent monitoring.
