Medtech Career Path in Sales: Sales Rep to Director

If you're a few years into medical device sales and wondering what actually comes next, you're not alone. Medical device career progression in sales in Australia tends to follow a similar path from one company to the next, even if the job titles shift slightly depending on where you work.

Knowing what that path looks like is genuinely useful. It gives you something to measure your own medical device sales career against, and it helps you focus on what gets you promoted, rather than just clocking up years in the same seat and hoping someone notices.

Medical Device Career Progression by Level

Territory Manager or Sales Representative

Most people start out here, whether they've come from a clinical background, allied health, or straight out of a graduate program. The job is pretty simple on paper: you're handed a patch of hospitals and judged on how much revenue you bring in against target.

In practice, it takes a while to get good at it. Building real trust with surgeons and clinicians doesn't happen overnight, and that trust is usually what gets you noticed for the next step. Most people spend three to five years in this seat before moving on.

Product Specialist or Clinical Applications Specialist

Not everyone goes straight up the ladder from here. Plenty of people take a sideways step into a product or clinical applications role first. Instead of chasing a sales number, you become the person everyone turns to for how a device actually works.

It's a good option if you've got a clinical background and want to stay close to the technical side of the job without giving up on commercial experience altogether.

Senior Territory Manager or Key Account Manager

Once you've shown you can hit target consistently, the usual next move is into a senior territory or key account role – bigger accounts, a bigger patch, more responsibility riding on you.

What you're actually selling starts to matter more at this stage too. If you're working with something more technical, like orthopaedics, cardiac devices, or surgical robotics, doors tend to open a bit faster. That kind of selling asks more of you clinically, and hiring managers notice when someone's handled it well.

Area or Regional Sales Manager

This is usually the first taste of managing people rather than just managing a territory. You'll pick up a small team of territory managers spread across a state or region, and suddenly your success depends on how well they perform, not just you.

It's also around here that careers genuinely start to split. Some people love being out on the road selling and choose to stay in that lane. Others start pushing towards management from this point on, and that choice tends to shape everything that follows.

National Sales Manager or Commercial Director

At the top of the ladder sits the national sales manager or commercial director role. Your own sales numbers matter a lot less now – it's more about setting the strategy, owning the forecast, and being accountable for how the whole business performs.

Getting there usually comes down to two things: a track record people can actually point to, and proof that you can build and lead a team, not just hit your own number year after year.

What Can Speed Up a Medical Device Sales Career

A few things can help with speeding up medical device career progression.

What you're selling

Something like implantable devices, capital equipment, or robotics-assisted surgical systems asks a lot more of you clinically, and that kind of experience stands out when you're going for a more senior role.

Who you work for

The bigger multinational device companies usually have a clearer path into leadership mapped out, while smaller distributors can be a bit more hit and miss. However, smaller companies often sometimes hand you more responsibility earlier simply because they need someone to step up and there's no one else in line.

Being open to moving around

Whether that's relocating for a regional role or trying your hand in marketing or clinical education for a stretch before coming back to sales. A lot of people who end up in director roles have spent time outside a pure sales seat somewhere along the way, and it tends to change how they think about the business once they're back in it.
